Introduction
Introduction
Aulick has partnered with a utility in Tennessee for many years to eliminate their collection system odor/corrosion by preventing hydrogen sulfide at different locations. With great success, our Nitra-Nox chemistry has prevented excess hydrogen sulfide and Aulick has recently added a 2nd-tier of odor control service to their program.
Challenge
Challenge
Hydrogen sulfide is a colorless, toxic, flammable ‘sewer gas’ with a pungent odor similar to rotten eggs. Hydrogen sulfide is the result of the breakdown of organic matter by bacteria, typically in an oxygen deprived environment such as a wastewater collection system.
Controlling this hazardous gas is one of the most important issues facing public utilities. Not only is it a nuisance to the local community and businesses, hydrogen sulfide has the potential to pose serious safety hazards to treatment personnel while its corrosiveness is damaging to treatment and collection system equipment and infrastructure.
In this specific odor control scenario, the customer was having spikes in hydrogen sulfide at a new location – see Graph 1 in the gallery below with OdaLog reading at the manhole discharge scaled to 500 ppm. Graph 1 depicts spikes in hydrogen sulfide at the discharge as high as 484 ppm. At this new location, Nitra-Nox had not yet been fed.
Our Solution
Our Solution
Graph 2 in the Gallery below shows a serious reduction in hydrogen sulfide at the discharge after Nitra-Nox application. The graphs show a level of only 42 ppm max hydrogen sulfide.
Aulick then added another tier of odor control support. Our Jackpot – Stainless Steel Odor Control Device, was inserted into the manhole discharge.
Graph 3 in the Gallery below shows after Aulick added ‘Tier 2’ Odor Control Service – The Jackpot with Activated Carbon Media Cartridge – hydrogen sulfide has been eliminated with only a max reading at 3 ppm. In this application, The Jackpot acted as a last line of defense and also as a ‘scrubber’ of the air that would ultimately escape the manhole. The Jackpot is a highly effective device that can be used in high traffic areas, neighborhoods, and around businesses and restaurants that have previously received community odor complaints.
